Hryre
A medieval moated manor house with sacred springs in Staffordshire
Period features, partially ruined, moat, spring, gardens, woodlands, plunge pool. Located in mid-Staffordshire.
Set in beautiful grounds and encircled by its ancient moat this partly ruined timber framed manor is an incredible example of timer framed architecture with soaring stone and brick chimneys and leaded light windows. One wing of the house is totally restored, whilst the remaining ruined building has its timber frame exposed.
Inside the restored wing you will find original features in abundance, carefully restored to bring out the incredible sense of history and majesty that this building would have once had. Every space has exposed carved wood beams, ancient timber floors and is furnished with antique pieces throughout. There are stone fireplaces and open fires or woodburners, vintage bathroom suites and lovely fabrics.
Outdoors, the house is surrounded by lawns and trees, and the moat has beautiful bridges. There are private woodlands and the spring itself which is stone built. There are gravelled areas and a lovely kitchen garden as well as a plunge pool.
Hyre would lend itself well to period drama and other types of filming and TV.
History and special interest
Hryre is an exceptional and fascinating historic site, and as such is listed as a scheduled monument and Grade II*. With history dating from Roman times this special place has been a centre of great importance, with the moats and original stone buildings here dating from the 1200s, and the oak frames of the later buildings also early medieval.
The sacred spring has been revered and used for centuries and is a site of particular ancient interest, along with later uses of the house as a Tudor hunting lodge. The manor is rumoured to be haunted….
