Herela

14th century Bedfordshire manor house with walled gardens, medieval stable block and barn

Herela has magnificent period features, wood panelling, stone fireplaces, antiques, and Tudor grandeur. Located 10 miles from Luton.

Herela is a unique medieval and Tudor survivor with magnificent period features including oak frames, wood panelling, and grand carved stone fireplaces. It is elegantly furnished with period antique pieces throughout. There is a plethora of exposed beams and brickwork, a large rustic kitchen and cellars.

Inside many historical features remain, including the Tudor Great Chamber, and a gorgeous wood panelled drawing room, these would provide exceptional interiors for your shots and would be wonderful for filming. Similarly the large bedrooms are furnished in appropriate style with four poster beds and antique items.

Outdoors, the pretty walled garden with manicured lawns and thoughtful planting shows the house off to wonderful effect with the red brick and render exterior with grand chimneys, leaded light windows and winding wisteria. There is a delightful patio area surrounded with roses, and winding gravel paths with wrought iron gates and secluded areas. There are also some attractive old stable buildings in a gravel courtyard with rustic weatherboarding.

Herela also offers accommodations for brand shoot and stays, retreats or workshops.

History and special interest

Herela has an incredible documented history going back to the very late 1300s. The house as we see it today shows significant periods of addition and rebuilding in the 1590s, 17th and 19th centuries, and retain a significant number of incredible and historically significant original features, and it is rightly Grade II* listed by Heritage England. Herela hosted King Charles II in the 1700s among other notable characters from this time.
