Cytwer

A large Victorian house in an exceptional location next to the river in Shropshire

Period features, interior designed, professional kitchen, weir, river frontage and terraces. Located just outside Ludlow.

Set under cliffs which suspend the medieval castle walls and alongside the river; Cytwer is a large Victorian house which has been recently restored and thoughtfully and interestingly designed by the current owners to create an exceedingly relaxing and inviting space with incredible attention to detail in all areas inside and out.

There is a large professional stainless steel kitchen which would suit culinary brands, as well as a private chef available if you are considering a retreat or event here. The house would lend itself very well to large groups, having 6 very spacious bedrooms, all of which are beautifully curated and furnished, and all are en-suite.

Each king size bed can be made into twins so Cytwer can sleep up to 14 meaning this would be a fabulous location for wellness, writing, or nature photography – of which there is an abundance in the grounds. There is a cinema room, a libraried snug, and cosy seating areas. The interior is restful and eclectic, mixing wonderful vintage pieces with modern facilities and style. There are period features throughout.

The communal areas inside are spacious and airy with large windows overlooking the river and weir, and have brilliant potential for retreats as there is a huge dining area and bar area, as well as outside terraces with wonderful planting and sculpture, pergolas and firepit, with soft seating for 12 overlooking the river, alongside a more formal outside dining space and terraces. The gardens are stunning by the river with weir and bridge, with opportunity for wild swimming and nature photography. It would be wonderful for any garden or countryside brands or outdoor wear.

With fishing, paddling, wild swimming or boating on the doorstep as well as having a historic woodland with ancient steps just across the bridge, it offers many photographic opportunities.

Cytwer offers accommodation for brand shoot and stays or retreats.

History and special interest

Cytwer set amongst some steep and fascinating history. The Millenium Green, right next door, is formerly the site of an old water powered corn mill dating back to 1332, now a popular spot by the river with locals and tourists with easy access to the river for dogs and their humans to paddle or swim.

Dinham Bridge was built in 1823 and sitting above it is Ludlow Castle - over a thousand years old. Work began on the hillside promontory in 1075 and continued over the next hundred years. It was a key defensive position aimed at keeping the nearby rebelling Welsh suitably subdued. The town grew up below its walls from the 12th century onwards, all laid out in the manner typical medieval town planning.

Meanwhile the castle continued to play its part – in the Wars of the Roses, and the English Civil War. It was also the place where, Arthur Tudor, Prince of Wales and Henry VIII’s older brother died in 1502, a circumstance that later had much to answer for. In the November of the preceding year, Arthur and his new bride, Catherine of Aragon, had gone to Ludlow Castle for their honeymoon. They were both 15 years old, and had been betrothed since infancy.
