Cynred

Cynred - an historic 16th Century Manor in Shropshire with extensive gardens and woodlands

Period features , Victorian conservatory, walled gardens, woodlands, shepherd’s huts, safari tent, fields, ponds, and rock garden. Located 14 miles from Ludlow.

Situated overlooking the stunning Shropshire Hills, since the 1580s Cynred has sat resplendent in the landscape, the beautiful brick façade with stone mullion windows and soaring chimney stacks testament to the family who built her all that time ago, their descendants still care for the estate today. A family home brimming with original features, heirlooms and antique furniture and artworks, it is steeped in their history.

Inside the house you will find fine plaster work, Tudor and Jacobean oak carving and panels and beautiful wooden and stone flag floors. Sweeping staircases, huge fireplaces, large light bedroooms with oak panelling, window seats, stone mullions with leaded light windows, and period correct furniture. A delight for historic films, and of course any historic, period, countryside or lifestyle brands and clothing.

The striking Victorian conservatory / glass house is a wonderful space with doors out to a lovely space for lunching on retreats, workshops or cast and crew overlooking the woodland.

Outdoors, the basic layout of the gardens and much of the planting from 1807 is still represented in the lawns, woodland, archery ground, former flower garden, pools and the secret Rock Garden (an 18th-century quarry turned into a 19th century pleasure ground with stone tunnel entrance, ferns and a small stone bridge over a sunken pond.) These magical areas would make incredible backdrops to any photography with walled gardens, fields, ancient trees, summer house, folly, cider press and more!

In the grounds is another house which sleeps 11, and additional accommodation in safari tent and shepherds huts, as well as the wonderfully appointed 4 bedrooms available in the main house. This would be a fabulous place to retreat, run a workshop for art or writing, as well as offering a practical solution for shoot and stays.

History and special interest

Cynred is Grade II* listed and still owned by the family who built it. These uninterrupted centuries make for an unbroken story throughout and the house is a treasure trove of history and utterly fascinating. So many of the unique heirlooms and collectibles within are connected to the family and have been cherished, making this Tudor building absolutely captivating.

The family has long supported environmentally friendly practice in the management of the estate and its properties. In the 1980s Cynred became one of the first private houses in Britain to install a woodchip burning boiler for its heating, using timber by-products from the estate's woodland. Today, an active solar farm on the Estate plays a significant role in reducing its carbon footprint and several of the Estate's cottages are now fuelled by renewable energy.
